Coal is obtained by mining & is usually found when mining stone.  Unlike iron & other minerals coals can be found at higher levels (above sea level as well.)  Coal is the most abundant mineral block (other than stone & dirt blocks) and is an essential block to have for creating torches & use a fuel in the furnace for cooking food & smelting.
